Materials

  • yarn, 3 colors
  • crochet hook - size G
  • yarn needle (or other large-eye needle)

Instructions

Row 1 - Ch 45. Hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Hdc in each remaining ch. (43 hdc)

Row 2 - Ch 3, turn. Hdc in each hdc all the way across. Change yarn color.

NOTE 1: Throughout the piece, the ch-3 is counted as a hdc.

NOTE 2: When you change yarn, always leave tails of yarn at least 3 inches long. These tails will become the "fringe" at the top of the hat.

Row 3 - Working in back loops only, hdc in each hdc all the way across. Ch 3, turn.

Row 4 - Working in both loops, hdc in each hdc all the way across. Change yarn color. Ch 3, turn.

Repeat Rows 3 and 4, 19 times.

At the end of the last row only, ch 1 and turn. With right sides together, and using the same color you started with, sc along the entire seam to join.

Turn hat right side out.

With a piece of yarn doubled, sew a loose running stitch along the top edge of the hat (just below the fringe) all the way around. Making sure all the fringe is on the outside, pull the yarn tight and tie off.

Trim any overly long pieces of fringe. Fold over the bottom edge to create a cuff (fold once for a wide cuff, twice for a narrower cuff).
