Crochet Christmas Holly Placemat

This crochet Christmas placemat is fairly easy to make. Go with the holly or replace it with some other accent, like flowers. And just by changing the colors, you can change the seasonal or holiday feel.

Materials

  • yarn (white, green, red)
  • size E crochet hook
  • yarn needle

Instructions

Placemat

Chain 10. Join with slip stitch to form a ring.

Round 1 - In ring, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, 4 dc. * 4dc, ch 3, 4 dc. Repeat from * 2 times. Slip stitch in top of starting ch-3.

Round 2 - Without turning, Ch 3, 1 dc in each dc. In ch-3 space, work 2 dc, 3 ch, 2 dc. * 1 dc in each dc. In ch-3 space, work 2 dc, 3 ch, 2 dc. Repeat from * all the way around. Slip stitch in top of starting ch-3.

Rounds 3 - 11 - Repeat Round 2. At end of round, 1 dc in each remaining dc. Slip stitch in top of starting ch-3.

(stitch count at end of each round: round 2 - 8 dc, round 3 - 12 dc, round 4 - 16 dc, round 5 - 20 dc, round 6 - 24 dc, round 7 - 28 dc, round 8 - 32 dc, round 9 - 36 dc, round 10 - 40 dc, round 11 - 44 dc)

Increase Sides

Row 1 - Attach yarn to any corner ch-3 space. Ch 3, dc in same space. Dc in each dc across. 2 dc in ch-3 space. Fasten off.

Row 2 - Attach yarn to top of starting ch-3 of Row 1. Ch 3, dc in each dc across. Fasten off.

Rows 3 and 4 - Repeat Row 2.

Weave in all loose yarn ends.

Edging

Round 1 - With right side of piece facing up, attach green yarn to right-hand corner of one of the increased sides. Ch 1. Sc in each dc across. In last dc of 1st side place 3 sc. Continuing to work around the edge, [ * sc at center of dc side, sc at bottom of dc side. Repeat from * 3 times. Sc at ch-3 space. Sc in each dc across. Sc at ch-3 space. * Sc at bottom of dc side. Sc at center of dc side. Repeat from * 3 times. 3 sc at top of corner ]. Ch 3. Sc in each dc across. 3 sc at top of corner. Repeat between [ ]. Slip stitch to beginning ch-1.

Round 2 - * Ch 3. Skip 1st sc. Slip stitch in next sc. Repeat from * all the way around. Slip stitch at base of starting ch-3 and fasten off.

Holly Leaf

Ch 8.

Round 1 - 3 dc in 4th chain from hook, hdc in next 2 ch, sc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working up the opposite side of starting chain, sc in next ch, hdc in next 2 ch, 3 dc in same ch as first 3 dc. Join with sl st in top of ch-3.

Round 2 - Ch 1, 3 sc in same slip stitch as joining. * Sc in next st. In next stitch, ch 2, sl st in side loop of last sc made (picot). Repeat from * 6 times. Sc in next 2 stitches. Slip stitch in next stitch. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Make 2 more leaves.

Berries

NOTE: On each berry, leave enough tails of yarn to "thread" the yarn ends through the leaves and placemat in order to attach the berries.

Ch 2. 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join to first sc with slip stitch. Fasten off, leaving a 6" tail of yarn.

Thread tail of yarn onto needle and weave through tops of each sc. Draw snug with right side out and secure.

Make 4 more berries.

Finishing

Arrange leaves on placemat and sew in place. Arrange berries and draw tails of yarn on each one through the leaves and placemat. Tie the ends of the yarn together on the backside of the placemat.

Weave in any loose ends of yarn.

Options

Make the same placemat but instead of holly and a green border accent it with Christmas pointsettia and a red border.
